2013 Movie Recap: Acting

2013 Movie Recap: Acting

The second last post of the 2013 Movie Recap series! We're gonna see my choices of 2013's best acting performances, including Best Actor in A Leading Role, Best Actress in A Leading Role, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, and Best Young Performers. Check them out!

BEST YOUNG PERFORMERS (UNDER 20 YEARS OLD)

TYE SHERIDAN
Mud

I’m not an avid coming-of-age fan but these young actors deserve my mentions for their outstanding performance on screen. Actually there are three young leading actors in The Kings of Summer but attention is easily given to the edgy performance by Moises Arias (he's 19 years old, the oldest in this category, fyi). Meanwhile, Lasse Fogelstrøm in The Hunt and Pauline Burlet in The Past played more dramatically, even comparable to their older opponent on screen. Of course, none of the three young actors could significantly win over duo Jacob Lofland-Tye Sheridan in the underrated flick Mud. As a leading character, Tye Sheridan never fail to amuse in showing his total performance—even he escalated the chemistry he made with his unlikely friend played by Matthew McConaughey.

runners-up

JACOB LOFLAND
Mud
    PAULINE BURLET
The Past

LASSE FOGELSTRØM
The Hunt
    MOISES ARIAS
The Kings of Summer

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS

ANNE HATHAWAY
Les Miserables

Julia Roberts’ acting as opposed to the living-legendary Meryl Streep in August: Osage County is afresh and adorable. Sally Hawkins’ innocent performance amazingly balanced the superb acting by Cate Blanchett in Blue Jasmine, but it is not enough to uproot Lupita Nyong’o’s unpretentious performance in 12 Years A Slave. It was a nice debut of hers. Meanwhile, I think playing a temperamental, somewhat psychologically-disturbed wife in American Hustle is not a difficult thing for Jennifer Lawrence, but finally the number 1 position for this category comes from the early 2013. Anne Hathaway short but stealing ‘I Dreamed A Dream’ musical scene in Les Miserables is a total tear-jerker. That one scene might even escalate the entire duration of the film. An Oscar is well deserved.

runners-up

JENNIFER LAWRENCE
American Hustle
    LUPITA NYONG'O
12 Years A Slave

SALLY HAWKINS
Blue Jasmine
    JULIA ROBERTS
August: Osage County

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR

JARED LETO
Dallas Buyers Club

Ryan Gosling’s limited screen time in The Place Beyond the Pines means both pain and struggle wrapped in calmness and tenderness, like what he usually shows in his previous work. And who expected that newcomer Barkhad Abdi could be so dangerous in Captain Phillips? He knows what to do to perform well but not abundantly: to be himself. So does Daniel Brühl, for his less talked role in Rush. He played effective and straight, so contrary to what James Franco did in Spring Breakers. He was such a badass. And is it wrong for me to say that 2013 is the year of breakthrough performance? Not only because of some incredible newcomers, but also the ones that already in the business. Like Jared Leto, also known as the vocalist of group band 30 Seconds to Mars, who has delivered his bestest, bestest performance as a transgender in Dallas Buyers Club. Wow, he was just.. wow.

runners-up

JAMES FRANCO
Spring Breakers
    DANIEL BRÃœHL
Rush

BARKHAD ABDI
Captain Phillips
    RYAN GOSLING
The Place Beyond the Pines

BEST ACTRESS IN A LEADING ROLE

CATE BLANCHETT
Blue Jasmine

Jennifer Lawrence never lost her spotlight playing the brave, rebellious Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and so far, her outstanding performance was the least mentioned by other viewers. However, I always rooted for Sandra Bullock’s amazing, emotional performance in Gravity. That woof-woof scene is simply heart-melting. Then comes Emma Thompson, playing the talky but fragile Mrs. Travers in Saving Mr. Banks, and Amy Adams, with her show-off-y hair-do and convincing performance in American Hustle. Still, my final decision comes to put Cate Blanchett on the top of the list, for her amazing up-and-down mood play in Blue Jasmine. An Oscar is undeniably hers this year.

runners-up

AMY ADAMS
American Hustle
    EMMA THOMPSON
Saving Mr. Banks

SANDRA BULLOCK
Gravity
    JENNIFER LAWRENCE
The Hunger Games: Catching Fire

BEST ACTOR IN A LEADING ROLE

LEONARDO DiCAPRIO
The Wolf of Wall Street
The wrongly-convicted Lucas in The Hunt is perhaps one of the most emotional performance we saw last year, thanks to the brilliant Mads Mikkelsen. And so is Tom Hanks’ beautiful resemblance of Captain Phillips, or the provocative and controversial role of Liberace played by Michael Douglas in TV-movie Behind the Candelabra. Old but gold, the senior actors are still shining with these challenging roles they played on screen. But it doesn’t necessarily mean that young actors won’t take their positions. Matthew McConaughey safe but surprisingly bold role in Dallas Buyers Club is inspiring, and finally Leonardo DiCaprio’s totally crazy role in the extravagant The Wolf of Wall Street. I applaud him doing the sickest (yet funniest) things in Wolf so, yeah, cheer him up and give him an Oscar statue please.

runners-up

MATTHEW McCONAUGHEY
Dallas Buyers Club
    MICHAEL DOUGLAS
Behind the Candelabra

TOM HANKS
Captain Phillips
    MADS MIKKELSEN
The Hunt

  1. Great post, I thought both kids in Mud were brilliant, particularly Sheridan. Julia Roberts was also excellent in my opinion, as were Lupita Nyong'o, Ryan Gosling, Leo DiCaprio, Matt McConaughey and Sandra Bullock.

  2. Kecewa sekali James Franco bahkan nggak masuk nominasi Oscar. Untuk Biaggio, kocak banget nih bocah emang.

    1. Karakternya James Franco di Spring Breakers kayaknya emang bukan seleranya Academy :)

  3. Great list overall, even though I'd rearrange the positions. Mikkelsen would be my number one, followed by McConaughey. I'd have Dench on the list, rather than Adams, Thompson, or Bullock. I'd completely kick off Franco and Jennifer Lawrence, whose performances were average at best IMO. The rest are great choices, and it's great that you've given love to the younger actors (Lofland was brilliant in Mud).

I think I'll make my own list too :)

    1. Too bad I haven't seen Philomena, maybe it'll be in my list next year.

You should make your own list too! It'll be fun :)

  4. Good selection. I'm not that big of a fan of Mud, but Sheridan was really good in it. Also, I disliked The Hunt, but the kid who played the son was good as well. And nice to see Pauline here! I should've put her on my list. And Jennifer Lawrence's performance in Catching Fire is quite underrated indeed. Overall a nice list!

    1. How could you dislike The Hunt! Hahaha. Even at first I wanted to put Annika Wedderkopp (that cute little girl portraying Klara) in this list.

    2. Yes! Annika Wedderkopp with her sniffing habit deserves it, too.
She's just too cruel, after all.
