Me On The Movie Presents: GONE GIRL Special Edition!

Me On The Movie Presents: GONE GIRL Special Edition!

Guess what? I’VE JUST FINISHED READING “GONE GIRL”

(Well I know it sounds too much but FYI I’m a very slow reader and this is the first American English-written novel I finish entirely—some applause won’t hurt!)

You know, I don’t usually read a novel. A fiction, to be exact. The last fictional novel I read is... umm... Dan Brown’s “The Lost Symbol”? Yeah, it’s back in my college years. So why suddenly reading “Gone Girl”? Most of my reason, I know you knew, is because it’s adapted to a movie directed by David Fincher. David Fincher. And you know how much I love Fincher and his works.

Gillian Flynn, the author of the novel, (re-)wrote it into a screenplay. 20th Century Fox has already announced that GONE GIRL will be released on Oct 3 and, yep, we already have a trailer (with a beautifully-remade “She” as the main song), we have a gorgeous official website (with that awesome, near-reality newsticker!), we have a teaser poster (with a calm-yet-suspicious text “YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT YOU’VE GOT ‘TIL IT’S...”; mind the ellipsis), we have an Entertainment Weekly special edition (with cover photo shot by Fincher and Fincher himself!), and we have lots of news supporting the buzz for the movie.

Gillian Flynn
Guys, here's Gillian Flynn :)

First, the cast. Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike are attached to the project, playing the leading characters: Nick Dunne and Amy Dunne. Second, the crew. Fincher re-teamed with his old pals: Jeff Cronenweth (director of photography), Kirk Baxter (editor, minus Angus Wall), and all; not to forget, Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross (music). Third, the story. “Gone Girl” is a best-selling mystery-romance with lots of twists that already make the book reader feel so satisfied by the book the movie looks unnecessary. But, Gillian Flynn stated that she made a different ending (yet not a totally different one, but enough to keep the reader curious about the movie), and the news alone is worth discussing.

Gone Girl
MISSING: AMY DUNNE

My next project is this: I’m trying to cover my opinion (or you may call it ‘analysis’) about how the movie will be, compared to the book, in a series of posts. I already prepared drafts for my next posts, including:
  1. my overall projection about the movie itself (like, say, compared to Fincher’s earlier works)
  2. my opinion about the cast (if selected actors are suitable with the characters described in the book, and all)
  3. my guess about the plot (including how much different the ending will be)
  4. my opinion about public reception (especially the movie’s chance for next year’s awards, perhaps)
I have to mention that I know how hard it is to read “Gone Girl” (how draggy its first half is, duh), so I’m trying to write them all without spoiling anything—or if I really have to spoil something, I’ll flag it. So it’s okay for you, curious Fincher lover, to read them without really read the book, although this discussion will be way more accessible if you already read the book

Here it is: Me On The Movie’s Special Edition of GONE GIRL. Hope you enjoy, wait for my next post (!),  and don’t forget to join the discussion!

  1. I'm really interested in seeing the changes Fincher made. I liked the novel, but I absolutely hated the ending. I suppose it was different and edgy, but I didn't want it to end that way. ha

    1. Me too! But I hope Fincher also paid attention to the psychology of a marriage instead of just the mysterious disappearance.

  2. Aaah it sounds like a great project, Bar! Sayangnya gw blm selesai baca dan gak tau deh kapan dilanjutin hehe tapi gw jg udah mikir2 sih gimana caranya Fincher nge-translate dua POV yg di novel jadi bahasa film. And hey good luck with the project!
