Blogathon: Life, Love, and the Movies!

Life, Love, and the Movies

I’m pretty excited to join this Life, Love, and the Movies blogathon since I first saw karamelkinema posted about it. I’m currently preparing my Annual Recap (which somehow delayed way further that I imagined, lol) but this blogathon is a fun one to spare my time writing and keeping up my blog updated.

In this post, all I have to do is answering some simple questions about my life and love life which in a way related to the movie world. You can join us too! Here’s what you have to do:

1. Write a blog post about it
2. Include one of the blogathon logos from this page in your post
3. Add a link to this blogathon announcement so others can participate as well.
4. Leave a comment there with a link to your post

-LIFE-

1. What was the first movie you saw in the cinema and what do you remember about that visit?

This might be funny: I never went to a cinema when I was a kid. My family does not have a so-called routine to go to cinemas and watch movies; we often watch movies at home via DVD or on TV. I recalled that I watch a movie at cinema for the very first time when I was a sophomore at high school. I watched a local film, called Ayat Ayat Cinta (The Verses of Love), together with my classmates. Basically the film contains an Islamic view on love, romance, and marriage. It was Feb 29th, 2008—oh yeah I remember the day, it was a very emotional moment for us :’)

2. Are there any movies you have very strong memories of which are not because of the movie (for example something which happened at the time you were watching it)?

I mentioned Ayat Ayat Cinta earlier; I have a quite strong memory about it because we watch it after having such a tear-jerking moment at class. And also, umm... I should mention another local film, Perahu Kertas, because it was the first movie I watched at cinema alone. And Thai horror, 4Bia, because I watched it together with my best friends in the final year of my college, right on the night before we separate for a month for having our own final semester task.

3. Which movies had a big impact on you and changed a (small) part of your view on life?

Hindi comedy, 3 Idiots. I remembered the tagline: “Chase excellence, success will follow”. The film encourages me not to look for tangible achievements like grades or wages only, but also to run for the better quality of myself, because that’s where true success comes from.

Cult classic, Fight Club. The film is kind of reminding me that I’ve been spending my life being a good guy, you know, the kind of guy who always obeys the rule, does what is instructed, and gets trapped in all good things. Fight Club encourages me to unleash the dangerous, ‘bad-guy’ part of myself. LOL.

A Serious Man. This film changes my view on life. It is actually potential to be interpretted differently by other viewers, but I feel like it has a very strong message. It tells me that if you do good things, does not mean you won’t get bad things happen to you, but if you really do bad things, it surely means that you will get bad things happen to you.

4. Do you have any comfort movies which you return to because you are in a specific mood (for example if you are feeling down/nursing a heartbreak)?

The Devils Wears Prada, every time I feel that my job sucks.
The Social Network, everytime I feel I should do something to release my anger.

5. If a movie would be made about your life, what type of movie would it be and who would you like to portray you?

It’s a drama, for sure. The kind of drama about a socially-awkward guy with some sorts of mental diseases that exclude him from the society, from which he use his inteligence to distinguishes him from people. But it shouldn’t be a happy-ending one. It should end realistically. Umm... I think Jesse Eisenberg suits my personality very well.

6. Which existing movie best represents you?

A Serious Man. In short, I’m neither happy nor sad these days.

7. If you knew you would die tomorrow, what would be the last movie you would want to see?

8. If you can spend your life working in the film industry, what would you be and why? (you know, director, producer, actor, cinematographer, costume designer, sound designer etc?)

I’d rather be a director who directs only the screenplays I also wrote by myself. I think it’s because I’d like to establish something I invented by myself, you know, so if I were to make a film I should be the one that writes the screenplay before executing it. I might also be a cinematographer or editor, because I feel like I have interests in that.

-LOVE-

1. Did you ever have a first kiss with someone while at the cinema and if so which movie was playing?

No. Gonna try it sometimes.

2. What is your favorite movie relationship and why?

Summer and Tom from (500) Days of Summer. I think choose it because it has something that connects with my personal life (lol). I love the up-and-down mood of their relationships, because it feels real.

3. When did your love for movies start and how has it grown?

Since I watched The Social Network. When I finished watching it, I was stunned because I can’t believe a film could be that smart, that awesome. And I started to support it to win every award it got nominated (especially at Golden Globe) and then I started looking for other films as brainy and rich as it is.

4. If you have to choose one film to watch with your loved one, what would it be and why?

Her and the Before trilogy. There is true meanings of love in these movies which is a bit hard to be described verbally. I'd love to see them with my loved one.

5. If you can choose one character from a movie to be your significant other who would it be and why?

Hermione (Emma Watson) from the Harry Potter series, Aimee (Shailene Woodley) from The Spectacular Now, and Celine (Julie Delpy) from the Before trilogy (only when she was about my age, probably when she was in Before Sunrise). The similarities of the three? They are all smart. We’d be having a great discussion throughout the night and day.

6. What was the first movie that made you fall in in love with film and cinema?

I told you, The Social Network.

7. How did your passion for movies turn you into a movie blogger?

Well it has something to do with my blogger fellow especially Daniel from MOVIE-FREAK and Fariz from VAMPIBOTS, whose blogs inspired and encouraged me to blog too. Practically I like movies, and I am good at writing. So, the best combination of the two, if not being a screenwriter, is being a movie blogger. And then suddenly I surrounded with all these movie people on Twitter and the atmosphere is so supportive for me to be a better movie blogger.

8. What is your favorite date from a movie?

Travis Bickle (Robert de Niro) and Betsy (Cybill Shepherd) from Taxi Driver. I personally like how Travis asked Betsy to go out with him, all of a sudden. Like, it was very direct. So straight. So manly.

And that's a wrap! It's good to share about my life that relates to movies. Thanks Nostra from My Filmviews and karamelkinema for this blogathon!

    1. I guess one of the reasons why I loved A Serious Man so much, beside that it is actually a good movie, is that I watched in a perfectly settled mood to receive such moral lesson. I admired it, I never imagined a bitter truth about our faith and life could be described very lightly by the duo directors. It's great, try a rewatch! :D

  4. Lovely answers! I was quite emotional too watching Ayat-ayat Cinta, the days when Hanung actually did a good job making a movie. 3 Idiots and Fight Club are great movies and quite inspiring in its own way.

The Before Trilogy is a popular choice, that's my answer too.

Well, Andrew Garfield sure did a good job on showing his anger in Social Network :)

    1. I think Ayat Ayat Cinta is one of the rarest Indonesian romance that gently inserted religion subtopic without being too thematic. Thank you!

  5. I'm gonna do this blogathon, now!

Just read your answers and I think I've found mine to share....
Well, I think there's a generation that thinks "Fight Club" has changed a part of 'em. I always remember how Tyler Durden barks, "Tomorrow will be the most beautiful day of Raymond K. Hessel's life. His breakfast will taste better than any meal you and I have ever tasted." just after beating Raymond up. Classy!
